Today’s Breakfast Club
A month or so ago, the beautiful and brilliant actress Alyssa Milano tweeted how much she appreciated a director of our generation, Mr. John Hughes. John indeed created a number of brilliant films for generation X, wonderful work that in some ways has been forgotten.
This morning, as I sat down with my coffee, contemplating the idea of making bacon, biscuits, and eggs with cheddar cheese and fresh basil, I took a moment out to see what was on the tele. The moment I saw the 1985 classic, “The Breakfast Club”, I had to sit down and watch. This of course made me think about not just today’s generation but my parents generation as well and the differences/similarities I would expect to encounter had I been able to live all three.
What I took most from John’s 1985 film was that despite the differences in each character, although for me, I was an absolute mix of all five during those wonderful high school days, was that, in the end they were all able to come to terms with who they were up to that point in there lives but most importantly, they gelled because they did something I don’t think my parents generation or today’s generation would have done, they talked to one another. Those five teens were able to socialize under strict conditions, conditions that stated they should not talk.
When I think of my parent’s generation, despite the era they grew up in when being rebellious was on everyone’s mind, had they been told during detention to sit, be quiet, and write a paper on a Saturday morning they very possibly would have done it without thinking twice. As for today’s generation, because of technology of all kinds, such students might have sat there and done there paper but they would have also found time to text which means they would have been able to still find time to be with there crowed/click of people thus not blending in with the different characters that surrounded them.
Both today’s generation and my parents would have been stuck and we have seen how that has turned out. Closed minds and lack of experiences do not bring people together they only continue to fuel ignorance and a blind eye to the world around them.
My request to you my dear, brilliant, and beautiful sisters and brothers is for you to not only watch the movie, “The Breakfast Club” and if you have already, watch it again, but to also take a few moments out of your week to put down those electronic devices that keep you in your own world and say hello to the person next to you.
I have said it once and I will say it again; we are in this world to learn from one another. All of our educational resources are not just at our fingertips; they are all around us, every day. Learn, listen, and even share with each other outside of your comfort zone. Who knows, maybe the person sitting next to you sometime this week may be me.
To All Of You, Goddess Bless-
Blessed Be-
